The same title was used at the last American Council of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese(AATSP) conference. I thought that if I was to ever make a presentation and I've suggested many times to those who do make presentations on the topic that "Medical Spanish: Who needs it!!!". And, someone from a medical school in Peru recently wrote me if I knew of locations in the USA that offered 'medical English' for the Spanish speaker. 'Who needs medical Spanish'? Your hospital needs translators, interpreters, nurses, physicians, and office staff need it. Maybe, right now in the emergency room. Or, at the reception desk. Occupational Spanish students, specializing in medical Spanish, need it. They're the ones who are going to write the new textbooks and computer software. They're going to teach nurses, physicians, office staff, etc basic Spanish and medical Spanish. Who's translating information, for example, found in medlineplus. Who's being educated in both languages and has a solid foundation in health information. And, how about those ESL teachers. Whose going to teach medical English. Who needs it. The medical school in Peru says they need it. James Phillips, MLS Librarian South Texas Community College Dr. Ramiro R.
