Volunteer Showcase

In recent years, hundreds of people - individuals and organized groups - have volunteered thousands of hours with the Willamette National Forest. What is even more incredible than the numbers is what these folks accomplished on the ground.

Volunteer Groups

Here is a sampling of groups that have donated many hours of service to keeping our forest in good shape. There are many more! Contact one of these groups if you're interested in the work they do and would like to join them.

Backcountry Horsemen of Oregon
West Cascade Chapter ~ Salem Or.

View ShelterThis group has been volunteering for at least 6 years and have adopted ten miles of stock trails adjacent to and within the Mt. Jefferson Wilderness. They perform trail maintenance and maintenance on stock corrals at Big Meadows Horse Camp. www.bcho.org

Chemeketan Hiking Club; Salem Or.
Chemeketans doing trail maintenance This group has been volunteering for at least 20 years. They perform trail condition surveys, and trail maintenance. www.chemeketans.org

Disciples of Dirt
Volunteer bike enthusiasts provide general trail maintenance on many of the district trails, including tread repair, removing logs, and erosion control.

Emerald Trail Rider Association
Riders work on the Huckleberry Flats OHV trail system clearing brush and debris, installing erosion control devises, repair tread and bridges.

Friends of Opal Creek
This group has been volunteering for 5 years, performing trail condition surveys, trail maintenance and doing volunteer outreach and recruitment for work parties in the Opal Creek Wilderness area. www.opalcreek.org

Mt. Jefferson Snowmobile Club winter sports
This group has been volunteering for over 30 years in and around the Santiam Pass Winter Sports area. They constructed the warming shelter at Ray Benson SnoPark, constructed and maintain the winter motorized trail system, provide information and education to winter visitors. http://www.mtjefferson.org

North Santiam Snowmobile Club winter sports
This group has been volunteering for 15 years. They maintain McCoy snow park and perform trail grooming, trail maintenance and shelter maintenance. www.santiamsnowmobileclub.org

Oregon Equestrian Trails
Several chapters of OET have been volunteering for over 25 years performing trail condition surveys, trail maintenance, horse camp repairs and camp ground construction. These groups have done work all across the Willamette National Forest. www.oregonequestriantrails.org

Oregon Hunters Association
Oregon Hunters Association volunteers planting a cedar tree with protective guardThis group has been coordinating volunteer efforts for 3 years for wildlife habitat improvement and clean up efforts along 15 miles of power line corridor on the Detroit RD. Approximately 80-100 volunteers from the following groups have helped in this effort. Bonneville Power Administration, Portland General Electric Company, Rocky Mt. Elk Foundation, The Ruffed Grouse Society, Oregon Dept. of Fish and Wildlife, Oregon Dept. Of Agriculture, Boy Scouts of America, Stop Oregon Litter and Vandalism, Mid Valley Crawlers - Salem 4 Wheel Drive Club, and the City of Detroit, Or.

Oregon Nordic Club Willamette Chapter winter sports
This group has been volunteering for 8 years. They perform trail condition surveys and trail maintenance on the winter trail routes on Detroit and Sweet Home Ranger Districts. www.onc.org

Oregon Paralyzed Veterans of America, Salem, Or.
This group has been volunteering their time as consultants on accessibility issues, and planning for 15 years on Detroit and Sweet Home Ranger Districts. http://www.oregonpva.org/

Pacific Crest Trail Association
This group has been volunteering for 15 years, performing trail condition surveys and trail maintenance along the Pacific Crest Trail on the Willamette National Forest. www.pcta.org

Ultra marathon Guys
Volunteers provide general trail maintenance in the Waldo Lake area.

Whitewater Creek Conservation Association
This group has contributed over a decade of work in fisheries research, documentation and riparian restoration for our fisheries biologists.

Willamette Backcountry Ski Patrol winter sports
Willamette Backcountry Ski Patrol on Eagle Rock This group provides first aid and assistance to injured skiers, checks ski trails for hazards, assists in search and rescue efforts, and provides maintenance of trails, and act as visitor information specialists at Gold Lake Sno-park.
