WU PARTICIPATES IN LETTER SIGNING BETWEEN U.S. AND TAIWAN AGRICULTURAL TRADE MISSIONS

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congressman David Wu today, alongside Taiwan's representative to the United States, Dr. Joseph Wu, participated in the signing of letters of intent outlining agricultural purchases between the United States and Taiwan over the next two years.  The letters represent purchases of about $3.9 billion from the U.S. agricultural sector, including wheat from Oregon.

"I welcome the opportunities to enhance trade between the United States and Taiwan.  Trade is a two-way street, and Taiwan has been a fair partner," Congressman Wu said.  "The relationship between our two nations lies deeper than our economic ties, as both nations strive to honor democracy, human rights, and the rule of law."

One of the letters of intent is between the U.S. Wheat Associates and the Taiwan Flour Mills Association.  The Taiwan Flour Mills Association has agreed to purchase a total of 1.7 million metric tons, equivalent to 62.46 million bushels, of U.S. wheat during 2008 and 2009, amounting to approximately $425 million.

Because of Oregon's successful wheat industry, Taiwan intends to purchase Oregon wheat and is sending six delegates of the Taiwan Flour Mills Association to Oregon from June 14-16.  The Oregon Wheat Commission, the Oregon Wheat Growers League, and the Pacific Grain Exporter Association will host the Taiwan delegation.
