WU VOTES TO BRING OUR TROOPS HOME, RESPONSIBLY END THE IRAQ WAR

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congressman David Wu today again cast two important votes in the latest attempt to end the president's war in Iraq.

"The president took this country down an irresponsible, dangerous path over four years ago. It is time to end U.S. involvement in what has become a civil war and to bring our troops home," stated Congressman Wu.

Congressman Wu first voted to bring our troops in Iraq home. Unfortunately, that legislation (H.R. 2237) failed by 177 to 255.

If the legislation had passed, the military would have began redeploying our troops currently serving in Iraq within 90 days of the legislation becoming law. The redeployment would have been required to be completed within 180 days.

With that legislation failing, Congressman Wu also voted for subsequent legislation (H.R. 2206) that would immediately fund operations in Iraq and Afghanistan for three months, but require the president to report to Congress outlining the status of the war and any progress toward achieving benchmarks in July. After receiving the report in July, Congress would have the opportunity to evaluate the situation in Iraq and vote on whether or not to continue to fund the war.

This legislation passed by 221 to 205. However, even if the legislation passes the U.S. Senate, the president is threatening another veto.

Congressman Wu continued, "It is time for the president to work responsibly with Congress to end his war. If he vetoes this legislation, it delays the day families across America will welcome home their sons and daughters. It also delays the day the many peoples of Iraq come to a political solution, the only way to end this war."
