WU APPOINTED TO THREE HOUSE COMMITTEES, NAMED CHAIRMAN OF TECHNOLOGY & INNOVATION SCIENCE SUBCOMMITTEE

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today Congressman David Wu accepted three committee assignments: Education & Labor, Science & Technology, and Foreign Affairs. Moreover, Congressman Wu will serve as chairman of the Technology and Innovation Subcommittee of Science & Technology.

"Through these committees I will continue to work on two issues important to Oregonians: improving education and growing the economy. These assignments will allow me to shape education policy in a way that helps students pursue a college degree so they are able to meet the needs of and compete in a 21st century economy. I will also work to see that American businesses grow here at home and can effectively compete in the global economy," stated Congressman Wu. "Additionally, I am pleased the Foreign Affairs Committee will present additional opportunities to weigh in on the current crisis in Iraq and see that the bar for future conflicts is high."

In his leadership role as chairman of the Technology and Innovation subcommittee, Congressman Wu will work on our ability to compete in a 21st century economy, protecting intellectual property rights for Oregon's high-tech sector and ensuring small businesses can effectively utilize federal research dollars.

At the top of the agenda for the Education and Labor Committee is renewing K-12 and higher education laws. Congressman Wu will explore ways to reduce the out-of-pocket costs for tuition so that a greater number of students are able to pursue a college education, and will work towards once again reducing class size and providing our schools with the funding needed to meet federal accountability requirements.

Given Congressman Wu's knowledge and interest in international policy, the Democratic leadership granted him an exception to serve on a third committee, the Foreign Affairs Committee. This will be the first Congress in which Congressman Wu will serve on this committee. In this committee, Congressman Wu will work on foreign relations, international economic policy, export controls, including nonproliferation of nuclear technology, and weighing international intervention, both for assistance and declaration of war.
