Certification The process by which a governmental or nongovernmental agency or association evaluates and recognizes an individual, institution, or educational program as meeting predetermined standards and thus is eligible to receive payment from, or to contract with, a specific program or source. Certification programs do not exclude the uncertified from practice as do licensure programs, but lack of certification may preclude them from receiving specific types of payment. For example, providers not certified by the Medicare program may not receive Medicare payments. SOURCE: Health Care in America: Trends in Utilization.
