Fort Pulaski National Monument welcomes volunteers. Below are position descriptions Fort Pulaski offers. If you are interested in assisting the park, contact the park at (912) 786-5787 or fill out an application and mail or fax. The Volunteer Coordinator will then contact you with program specifics.
Fee Collection
Collect entrance fees for visitors using computerized cash register. Sell National Park Passes, etc. Maintain accountability of government funds, passes, and all collection forms. May be required to work fee collection booth at park entrance. Provide visitors information concerning the history and significance of the area. Sell items in the visitor center bookstore or sutler store using computerized register.
Guide
Develop and present interpretive talks to visitors, including structured and impromptu talks. Employ techniques geared to the characteristics and interests of particular audiences. Talks should:
- increase visitor understanding of park resources and visitor enjoyment of resources.
- increase understanding of the National Park Service mission.
- induce in visitors behavior consistent with resource protection and compliance with the law and rules..
- inspire persons to develop a sense of stewardship and a personal environmental consciousness in their daily lives.
Resource Assistant
Volunteers involved with resource work assist rangers with the preservation and protection of the park's natural resources. Individuals accompany rangers on boat patrols of McQueen's Island/Oyster Creek to monitor resource violations and to maintain the park boundary. Volunteers are physically fit to assist with boat handling, crab trap retrieval, and boundary marking.
Historic Housekeeper
Maintain fort exhibit rooms and artifacts with approved curatorial methods. Dust, sweep, and clean window panes as needed. Polish furniture as needed. Monitor audio stations. Walk fort grounds and be visible to answer basic questions pertinent to the site.
Living History Volunteers
Participate in living history and other interpretive events at Fort Pulaski including cannon & musket firing demonstrations, leading guided tours, participating in special events, etc.
Maintenance
Assist maintenance crews in landscaping, trail work, woodworking, restoration, preservation, etc.
