FOURTH ANNUAL EXPERIENCE THE
OUTDOORS DAY FOR ADULTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS PLANNED
CUSTER, SD: SEPTEMBER 5, 2008
There will be singing around the campfire and wagon rides at the
annual outdoors day for adults with special needs this coming week.
The Black Hills National Forest and its campground concessionaire,
Forest Recreation Management, Inc. (FRM) will hold their fourth
annual Experience the Outdoors (ETO) day at the Horsethief Lake
campground on Wednesday, September 10, 2008.
About 200 adults with special developmental needs will be the guests
of FRM and the Forest Service at an event held to highlight the
outdoor opportunities that can be found throughout the Black Hills
National Forest.
ETO is a cooperative effort with help from the SD Game, Fish, and
Parks providing fishing poles and free fishing at the lake. Custer
State Park and Mount Rushmore National Memorial provide interpretative
services and assist with the activities. Singing, cowboy poetry,
and wagon rides are also among the many activities offered. Cooking
out on a campfire and preparing s’mores will be included.
Hiking on accessible trails and enjoying the outdoors in the forested
setting along with great fishing in the lake have been past favorite
highlights of the day.
The whole event is organized by FRM and partnering public land
management agencies and is centered around a commitment to the local
community and wanting to provide a special day to some special guests
that otherwise wouldn’t have the chance to visit the Forest’s
many recreational opportunities in South Dakota and Wyoming.
