OCCUPANCY AND USE RESTRICTIONS
BLACK HILLS NATIONAL FOREST
BLACK ELK WILDERNESS
This Special Order replaces Special Order number BKF-2002-062
signed by Forest Supervisor John C. Twiss on May 13, 2002.
Pursuant to 36 CFR 261.50 (a) and (b), the following acts are prohibited in the Black
Elk Wilderness.
- Entering or being in the Black Elk Wilderness as part of a group larger
than 25 people and/or livestock combined. {36 CFR 261.57(a)}
- Entering or being in the Black Elk Wilderness without a properly
completed self-registration form. {36 CFR 261.57a)}
- Camping within 1/4 mile of Harney Peak summit or within the Harney
Peak Lookout building. {36 CFR 261.58(e)}
- Camping within 100 feet of water sources. {36 CFR 261.58(e)}
- Disposing of human waste within 100 feet of a stream or water. {36
CFR 261.57(g)}
- Shortcutting a switchback in a trail. {36 CFR 261.55(e)}
- Hitching, tethering, or tying a horse or other saddle or pack animal
to a live tree except while loading or unloading. {36 CFR 261.58(aa)}
- Hitching, tethering, or hobbling a horse or other saddle or pack animal
within 100 feet of a stream. {36 CFR 261.58(aa)}
- Possessing a dog not on a leash or under strict voice control. {36
CFR 261.58(s)}
- Possessing a bicycle, stroller, wagon, cart or other motorized or
mechanical vehicle. {36 CFR 261.57(h)}
- Storing, or leaving, equipment, personal property or supplies for
longer than 72 hours. {36 CFR 261.57(f)}
Pursuant to 36 CFR 261.50(e), the following are EXEMPT from this order:
- Persons with a permit specifically authorizing the otherwise prohibited
act or omission.
- Any Federal, State, or local officer or member of an organized rescue
or firefighting force when involved in the performance of an official
duty.
