Keaau Middle College is an alternative High School program for students
attending Kea'au High School.  Kamehameha School – Hawaii and Maui
Preparatory Academy are private schools on the Island of Hawaii and
Maui, respectively.
All other schools are public schools.  Entries were also received from
the islands of Molokai and Lanai.

The theme of the 2008 competition encompasses the traditional Hawaiian
value of pono – to live with respect for everyone and in harmony with
everything.  Students were asked to imagine a world of pono, where
their peers, teachers, family and community worked in harmony on common
goals and to reflect on how pono relates to civil rights and the ideals
of equality, harmony, and diversity.

The HCRC received generous and enthusiastic support in the expansion of
its art contest into the medium of video arts and the broadening of its
theme to express a Hawaiian perspective on civil rights from its many
co-sponsors: the State of Hawaii Department of Education, the Hawaii
Association of Charter Schools, the Hawaii Association of Independent
Schools, PBS Hawaii, Hawaiian Telcom, Computer Data Systems, Kamehameha
Schools, and the Office of Hawaiian Affairs.

According to the HCRC Executive Director William D. Hoshijo, “"At its
core, civil rights are about treating each other with dignity and
respect.  Too often, we get caught up in legal arguments and political
debate.  The students remind us through their art and video that these
are basic and fundamental human values.  Civil rights relate directly
to the Hawaiian value of pono.  We all should ask ourselves the
question that the students address - What kind of Hawaii do we want to
live in?"

Winners of the 2008 E Ola Pono Art and Video Competition will be
announced on PBS Hawaii on Thursday, March 27, 2008 at 8:30 p.m.
