Statistical Tests

We invite you to try our statistical testing utility. It allows the user to perform significance tests of:

  • the difference between two values,
  • multiple comparison (Bonferroni Test)
  • the slope of a linear trend line, and
  • the difference in the slopes of two linear trend lines.

You can use the web-based utility by typing the values to be tested and their standard errors in the designated text boxes of the web-based utility at http://205.207.175.93/utils. The results will appear in the box at the bottom of the screen.

To test the data in the Beyond 20/20 Browser, go to the Tools menu. To add the utility to the Beyond 20/20 Browser software, download the installation file posted at ftp://ftp2.beyond2020.com/outgoing/NCHS/setup.exe and run the setup program. Once you have run Install you will see eight items in your Tools menu in the Beyond 20/20 table, including Help for each statistical test. Please note that the statistical testing in the downloadable Beyond 20/20 tables (unlike the web-based utility) cannot perform trend tests when there are unequal intervals of the independent variable (e.g., testing a trend when the data years are 1995, 1996, and 1999.)

Please send your comments, questions, and suggestions about the Statistical Utility to nha@cdc.gov.
