Women in Science and Technology

Office of International Women's Issues
Santiago, Chile
May 9-12, 2007

Senior Coordinator, Andrea Bottner, conducted a presentation at the U.S.-Chile Joint Commission Meeting (JCM) on Science and Technology regarding the prevalence of women earning science and engineering fields in the United States. This was the first time this topic was addressed at a JCM and both governments agreed this is an area they would like to explore further.

At the request of the International Women's Issues office, a roundtable discussion was organized by Comisión Nacional de Investigación Científica y Tecnológica (CONICYT) and the U.S. Embassy in Santiago, which took place after the JCM. Fourteen Chilean women scientists took part in the discussion with Assistant Secretary of Oceans, Environment and Science at the U.S. State Department, Claudia McMurray; Jean Weaver from U.S. Geological Survey, and Dr. Penny Rechkemmer from the Office of International Women's Issues, U.S. Department of State; and led by CONICYT President Vivian Heyl.
