CONGRESSMAN TOWNS CALLS FOR RENAMING CROWN
HEIGHTS POST OFFICE AFTER COUNCILMAN JAMES E. DAVIS

Washington, DC - Congressmen Ed Towns (D-Brooklyn) announced plans on Friday at the current Lefferts Station Post Office to  introduce legislation in the House of Representatives to rename the Crown Heights facility in honor of slain Councilman James Davis.

"With James, it was always about the community," said Congressman Towns.  "He was dedicated to his community, having served as a police officer and district leader before being elected to the city council. One could always see the love he had for his community.

"Naming a post office after him would be a lasting tribute to all of his hard work for the community he so loved.  While we still have a heavy heart for losing such a good friend, this post office can help us celebrate the life of Councilman Davis."

Towns was joined by Congressman Major Owens (D-Brooklyn) and Senator Charles Schumer (D-New York), who is expected to introduce similar legislation in the Senate.

The expected legislation would rename the current post office at 315 Empire Boulevard, which serves zip code 11225, after the New York City Councilman who was murdered in the Council Chambers last week.  Ms. Thelma Davis, James' mother, lives just around the corner from this building, which is located on a bustling strip at the center of Davis' district.

"When I head back to Washington, D.C. at the end of the month, you can be sure that I will be working with friend and foe, Democrat and Republican to make sure that this post office is renamed after Councilman James Davis," Towns told those at the event.  "As a member of the Government Reform Committee, which is in charge of renaming post offices in the House of Representatives, I will make it one of my top priorities to get this done."
