Millennium Challenge Corporation and Kingdom of Lesotho to Sign $363 Million Millennium Challenge Compact

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Chair of the Board of the Millennium Challenge Corporation; Prime Minister of Lesotho Pakalitha Mosisili; and MCC Chief Executive Officer Ambassador John Danilovich will give remarks at the signing of the Millennium Challenge Compact between the United States and the Kingdom of Lesotho, onMonday, July 23, 2007, at 3:00 p.m. in the Benjamin Franklin Room of the U.S. Department of State.

The five-year, $363 million compact with Lesotho aims to increase water supplies for industrial and domestic use; to mitigate the devastating affects of poor maternal health, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and other diseases; and to remove barriers to foreign and local private sector investment. The Compact will be signed by Ambassador Danilovich and Lesotho's Minister of Finance and Development Planning Timothy Thahane.

The Millennium Challenge Corporation, an independent United States government corporation designed to work with some of the poorest countries in the world, is based on the principle that aid is most effective when it reinforces good governance, economic freedom, and investments in people that promote economic growth and elimination of extreme poverty.

This event is open to the press.
