SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending March 15, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 312,000, an increase of 3,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 309,000. The 4-week moving average was 312,250, an increase
of 1,500 from the previous week's revised average of 310,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0
percent for the week ending March 8, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 2.0 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending March 8 was 2,328,000, an increase of 1,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,327,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,354,000, a
decrease of 20,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,374,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 294,736 in the week ending March 15, a decrease of 20,572
from the previous week. There were 357,070 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1996.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.5 percent during
the week ending March 8, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,826,065, a
decrease of 87,468 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.8
percent and the volume was 3,147,562.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending March
1.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,547 in the week ending March 8, an increase of 38 from the prior
week. There were 1,988 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase
of 108 from the preceding week.
There were 26,306 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending March 1, an increase of 1,324 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 22,364, a decrease of 514 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending March 1 were
in Alaska (6.6 percent), Puerto Rico (5.9), Rhode Island (5.1), Montana (4.4),
Idaho (4.3), Maine (3.8), Pennsylvania (3.8), West Virginia (3.8), California
(3.7), and Washington (3.7).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending March 8 were
in Pennsylvania (+2,405), Michigan (+1,604), Kentucky (+1,599), Tennessee
(+1,280), and Texas (+1,266), while the largest decreases were in New York
(-5,514), North Carolina (-2,968), Ohio (-1,574), Arkansas (-1,301), and New
Jersey (-1,196).
