SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending March 8, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 307,000, a decrease of 5,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 312,000. The 4-week moving average was 310,250, a decrease of
250 from the previous week's revised average of 310,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0
percent for the week ending March 1, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.1 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending March 1 was 2,335,000, a decrease of 22,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,357,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,376,250, a
decrease of 17,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,393,250.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 312,886 in the week ending March 8, a decrease of 4,397
from the previous week. There were 355,818 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1996.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.5 percent during
the week ending March 1, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,924,015, a decrease of 52,456 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 2.9 percent and the volume was 3,282,378.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending Feb.
22.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,507 in the week ending March 1, an increase of 30 from the prior
week. There were 1,879 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase
of 201 from the preceding week.
There were 24,939 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Feb. 22, a decrease of 2,362 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 22,994, a decrease of 249 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Feb. 22 were
in Alaska (7.4 percent), Puerto Rico (6.0), Rhode Island (5.6), Idaho (4.2),
Maine (4.2), Montana (3.9), California (3.8), Oregon (3.8), Washington (3.8),
and New Jersey (3.7).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending March 1 were
in New York (+8,320), Arkansas (+1,694), Ohio (+1,509), New Jersey (+1,197),
and Illinois (+1,184), while the largest decreases were in Massachusetts
(-4,126), Texas (-2,166), Michigan (-2,119), Rhode Island (-1,359), and
Connecticut (-1,173).
