SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending July 5, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 377,000, an increase of 40,000 from the previous week's
unrevised figure of 337,000. The 4-week moving average was 348,500, an increase
of 9,500 from the previous week's unrevised average of 339,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1
percent for the week ending June 28, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.0 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending June 28 was 2,478,000, an increase of 159,000 from the
preceding week's revised level of 2,319,000. The 4-week moving average was
2,332,250, an increase of 50,000 from the preceding week's revised average of
2,282,250.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 370,828 in the week ending July 5, an increase of 73,042
from the previous week. There were 383,000 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1996.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8 percent during
the week ending June 28, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,131,347, an
increase of 49,060 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.0
percent and the volume was 2,257,174.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
June 21.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 2,340 in the week ending June 28, an increase of 405 from the prior
week. There were 1,696 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase
of 22 from the preceding week.
There were 19,421 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending June 21, an increase of 1,329 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 17,881, a decrease of 49 from the
prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending June 21 were
in Puerto Rico (6.0 percent), Alaska (4.1), Rhode Island (3.1), Hawaii (2.9),
California (2.7), Pennsylvania (2.7), Oregon (2.5), Washington (2.4), Arkansas
(2.4), New Jersey (2.4), and West Virginia (2.4).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 28 were
in Michigan (+6,337), Massachusetts (+3,481), Virginia (+2,626), New York
(+2,416), and New Jersey (+2,366), while the largest decreases were in
Pennsylvania (-3,783), Ohio (-1,421), Oregon (-1,084), Florida (-985), and
Illinois (-909).
