SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending June 28, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 337,000, an increase of 5,000 from the previous week's
unrevised figure of 332,000. The 4-week moving average was 339,000, a decrease
of 250 from the previous week's revised average of 339,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0
percent for the week ending June 21, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 2.0 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending June 21 was 2,351,000, an increase of 81,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,270,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,290,500, an
increase of 18,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,271,750.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 298,229 in the week ending June 28, an increase of 7,531
from the previous week. There were 315,615 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1996.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8 percent during
the week ending June 21, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,111,385, an
increase of 42,999 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.1
percent and the volume was 2,320,261.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending June
14.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,935 in the week ending June 21, an increase of 9 from the prior week.
There were 1,674 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 70
from the preceding week.
There were 18,139 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending June 14, a decrease of 710 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 18,004, a decrease of 214 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending June 14 were
in Puerto Rico (6.1 percent), Alaska (4.3), Rhode Island (3.0), Hawaii (2.9),
California (2.7), Pennsylvania (2.5), Arkansas (2.5), Oregon (2.5), Washington
(2.5), and New Jersey (2.4).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 21 were
in New Jersey (+2,918), California (+2,557), Connecticut (+1,055),
Massachusetts (+946), and Rhode Island (+887), while the largest decreases were
in Illinois (-3,961), Michigan (-3,918), North Carolina (-2,437), Pennsylvania
(-1,628), and Ohio (-1,487).
