SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Jan. 25, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 351,000, an increase of 10,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 341,000. The 4-week moving average was 344,750, a decrease of
5,500 from the previous week's revised average of 350,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1
percent for the week ending Jan. 18, unchanged from the prior week's revised
rate of 2.1 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Jan. 18 was 2,448,000, unchanged from the preceding week's
revised level of 2,448,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,501,250, a decrease
of 27,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,529,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 401,114 in the week ending Jan. 25, a decrease of 112,504
from the previous week. There were 492,965 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1996.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.6 percent during
the week ending Jan. 18, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,998,878, a decrease of 104,630 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 3.1 percent and the volume was 3,472,769.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
Jan. 11.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 2,543 in the week ending Jan. 18, a decrease of 1,256 from the prior
week. There were 2,113 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease
of 222 from the preceding week.
There were 27,806 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Jan. 11, a decrease of 17,146 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 24,351, a decrease of 120 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Jan. 11 were
in Alaska (7.5 percent), Rhode Island (5.5), Puerto Rico (5.1), Idaho (4.4),
Arkansas (4.1), Washington (4.1), California (4.0), Maine (4.0), Montana (3.9),
and Pennsylvania (3.9).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Jan. 18 were
in New Mexico (+853), Kansas (+521), Puerto Rico (+100), Nebraska (+76), and
the District of Columbia (+15), while the largest decreases were in North
Carolina (-19,383), Tennessee (-13,611), South Carolina (-10,262), Alabama
(-8,233), and Pennsylvania (-7,384).
