SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Jan. 18, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 355,000, an increase of 34,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 321,000. The 4-week moving average was 353,750, an increase
of 2,750 from the previous week's revised average of 351,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2
percent for the week ending Jan. 11, unchanged from the prior week's revised
rate of 2.2 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Jan. 11 was 2,482,000, a decrease of 98,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,580,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,539,000, an
increase of 9,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,529,750.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 534,589 in the week ending Jan. 18, a decrease of 119,702
from the previous week. There were 510,824 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1996.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.7 percent during
the week ending Jan. 11, a decrease of 0.3 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 3,147,008, a decrease of 268,767 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 2.9 percent and the volume was 3,269,757.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
Jan. 4.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 3,794 in the week ending Jan. 11, an increase of 1,605 from the prior
week. There were 2,333 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase
of 514 from the preceding week.
There were 45,078 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Jan. 4, an increase of 17,873 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 24,530, an increase of 1,408 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Jan. 4 were in
Alaska (6.7 percent), Rhode Island (6.4), Puerto Rico (5.3), Arkansas (4.9),
Idaho (4.8), Michigan (4.6), Washington (4.6), Oregon (4.4), Pennsylvania
(4.3), and Montana (4.2).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Jan. 11 were
in Ohio (+11,329), North Carolina (+11,269), Georgia (+11,085), Tennessee
(+10,644), and Pennsylvania (+8,432), while the largest decreases were in New
York (-11,966), Michigan (-8,365), Arkansas (-3,155), Indiana (-1,265), and New
Mexico (-833).
