SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Jan. 11, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was
323,000, a
decrease of 32,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 355,000. The 4-week moving
average was
348,750, a decrease of 6,750 from the previous week's revised average of 355,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.4 percent for the week
ending Jan.
4, an increase of 0.2 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.2 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending
Jan. 4 was
2,714,000, an increase of 195,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,519,000. The
4-week moving
average was 2,559,250, an increase of 55,750 from the preceding week's revised average of
2,503,500.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 658,707
in the
week ending Jan. 11, an increase of 133,813 from the previous week. There were 637,927
initial claims
in the comparable week in 1995.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 3.1 percent during the week ending
Jan. 4, an
increase of 0.6 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for
persons claiming
UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,593,167, an increase of 708,633 from the preceding
week. A year
earlier, the rate was 3.0 percent and the volume was 3,337,177.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Dec. 28.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,201 in the week
ending
Jan. 4, an increase of 383 from the prior week. There were 1,782 initial claims by newly
discharged
veterans, an increase of 443 from the preceding week.
There were 27,115 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week
ending Dec.
28, a decrease of 1,712 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits
totaled
23,038, an increase of 1,024 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Dec. 28 were in Alaska (6.4
percent), Rhode
Island (5.1), Idaho (4.4), Puerto Rico (4.3), Washington (4.3), Montana (4.2), Oregon (4.2),
Arkansas
(3.7), California (3.7), and Wisconsin (3.6).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Jan. 4 were in North Carolina
(+27,879),
New York (+19,998), South Carolina (+12,355), Alabama (+10,049), and California (+6,175),
while the
largest decreases were in Wisconsin (-12,094), Michigan (-10,137), Kentucky (-8,746),
Illinois (-8,713), and Massachusetts (-7,676).
