SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Dec. 28, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 366,000, an increase of 22,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 344,000. The 4-week moving average was 352,500, an increase
of 9,000 from the previous week's revised average of 343,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2
percent for the week ending Dec. 21, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 2.2 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Dec. 21 was 2,558,000, an increase of 102,000 from the
preceding week's revised level of 2,456,000. The 4-week moving average was
2,510,250, an increase of 39,250 from the preceding week's unrevised average of
2,471,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 510,341 in the week ending Dec. 28, an increase of 78,815
from the previous week. There were 513,686 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1995.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1 percent during
the week ending Dec. 21, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,443,290, a decrease of 103,914 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 2.5 percent and the volume was 2,782,295.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
Dec. 14.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,866 in the week ending Dec.21, a decrease of 355 from the prior week.
There were 1,938 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 200
from the preceding week.
There were 28,387 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Dec. 14, a decrease of 1,926 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 23,842, an increase of 1,179 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Dec. 14 were
in Alaska (6.0 percent), Puerto Rico (4.7), Rhode Island (3.9), California
(3.8), Montana (3.7), Washington (3.7), Idaho (3.4), Oregon (3.4), Pennsylvania
(3.1), Arkansas (3.0), New Jersey (3.0), and West Virginia (3.0).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Dec. 21 were
in Virginia (+6,661), Kentucky (+5,201), Texas (+4,108), Illinois (+4,030), and
Missouri (+3,341), while the largest decreases were in California (-10,680),
North Carolina (-7,003), Georgia (-3,064), South Carolina (-2,649), and Alabama
(-1,544).
