SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending May 17, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 322,000, an increase of 5,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 317,000. The 4-week moving average was 333,250, an increase
of 750 from the previous week's revised average of 332,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0
percent for the week ending May 10, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 2.0 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending May 10 was 2,299,000, an increase of 10,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,289,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,280,250, an
increase of 8,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,271,750.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 267,252 in the week ending May 17, a decrease of 10,309
from the previous week. There were 287,898 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1996.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent during
the week ending May 10, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,213,812, an
increase of 688 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.2
percent and the volume was 2,441,081.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending May 3.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,725 in the week ending May 10, a decrease of 42 from the prior week.
There were 1,626 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 81
from the preceding week.
There were 20,972 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending May 3, an increase of 1,273 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 19,475, a decrease of 303 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending May 3 were in
Puerto Rico (5.8 percent), Alaska (5.6), North Dakota (4.3), Rhode Island
(3.5), Oregon (3.0), Vermont (3.0), California (2.9), Washington (2.9), Idaho
(2.8), and Montana (2.8).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending May 10 were
in Pennsylvania (+1,582), Tennessee (+1,452), Ohio (+1,064), Alabama (+1,011),
and Florida (+790), while the largest decreases were in New York (-6,336),
North Dakota (-2,231), Minnesota (-1,841), Kentucky (-1,758), and New Jersey
(-1,399).
