ETA Press Release: Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report [08/29/1996]

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Aug. 24, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 331,000, an increase of 4,000 from the previous week's unrevised figure of 327,000. The 4-week moving average was 323,250, an increase of 9,250 from the previous week's unrevised average of 314,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2 percent for the week ending Aug. 17, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.2 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Aug. 17 was 2,525,000, an increase of 19,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,506,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,503,000, a decrease of 3,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,506,500.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 260,272 in the week ending Aug. 24, a decrease of 5,734 from the previous week. There were 272,182 initial claims in the comparable week in 1995.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0 percent during the week ending Aug. 17, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,287,767, a decrease of 30,359 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.1 percent and the volume was 2,366,346.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Aug. 10.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,882 in the week ending Aug. 17, a decrease of 507 from the prior week. There were 2,261 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 171 from the preceding week.

There were 26,679 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Aug. 10, a decrease of 2,430 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 22,661, an increase of 235 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Aug. 10 were in Puerto Rico (5.7 percent), Rhode Island (3.9), Alaska (3.6), California (3.2), New Jersey (3.1), Washington (3.1), Hawaii (2.9), Pennsylvania (2.9), Oregon (2.8), and Connecticut (2.7).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Aug. 17 were in Delaware (+1,643), Michigan (+939), New York (+835), Mississippi (+189), and Utah (+128), while the largest decreases were in California (-6,886), Illinois (-1,369), Virginia (-1,095), Kentucky (-992), and Pennsylvania (-973).
