SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Aug. 17, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 327,000, an increase of 6,000 from the previous week's unrevised figure of 321,000. The 4-week moving average was 314,000, an increase of 1,500 from the previous week's revised average of 312,500.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2 percent for the week ending Aug. 10, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.2 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Aug. 10 was 2,521,000, an increase of 55,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,466,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,510,250, a decrease of 13,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,523,750.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 266,562 in the week ending Aug. 17, a decrease of 22,022 from the previous week. There were 286,017 initial claims in the comparable week in 1995.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1 percent during the week ending Aug. 10, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,331,887, a decrease of 6,018 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.2 percent and the volume was 2,428,865.

Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the week ending Aug. 3.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,387 in the week ending Aug. 10, an increase of 320 from the prior week. There were 2,430 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 241 from the preceding week.

There were 29,121 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Aug. 3, an increase of 1,385 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 22,421, a decrease of 576 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Aug. 3 were in Puerto Rico (6.0 percent), Rhode Island (3.9), Alaska (3.7), California (3.2), Hawaii (3.1), New Jersey (3.1), Washington (3.1), Pennsylvania (3.0), Oregon (2.8), and Connecticut (2.7).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Aug. 10 were in California (+1,918), Alabama (+1,250), Arkansas (+1,129), New Jersey (+975), and Texas (+928), while the largest decreases were in Missouri (-3,049), Ohio (-1,145), South Carolina (-997), Michigan (-869), and Puerto Rico (-639).
