SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Aug. 10, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 321,000, an increase of 5,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 316,000. The 4-week moving average was 313,000, a decrease of 11,500 from the previous week's revised average of 324,500. This was the lowest since May 20, 1989, when it was 311,500.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2 percent for the week ending Aug. 3, unchanged from the prior week's revised rate of 2.2 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Aug. 3 was 2,471,000, a decrease of 63,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,534,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,529,750, a decrease of 22,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,552,000.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 288,775 in the week ending Aug. 10, an increase of 5 from the previous week. There were 296,712 initial claims in the comparable week in 1995.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1 percent during the week ending Aug. 3, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,342,560, a decrease of 51,619 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.2 percent and the volume was 2,433,531.

Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the week ending July 27.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,138 in the week ending Aug. 3, a decrease of 351 from the prior week. There were 2,224 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 49 from the preceding week.

There were 27,769 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending July 27, a decrease of 1,610 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 23,095, a decrease of 29 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending July 27 were in Puerto Rico (6.6 percent), Rhode Island (4.1), Alaska (3.7), California (3.3), New Jersey (3.2), Pennsylvania (3.1), Washington (3.1), Hawaii (3.0), Oregon (2.8), and Connecticut (2.7).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Aug. 3 were in California (+1,905), Missouri (+1,784), South Carolina (+853), Puerto Rico (+754), and Maryland (+753), while the largest decreases were in North Carolina (-2,818), Texas (-1,606), Georgia (-1,209), Alabama (-1,084), and Ohio (-1,062).
