SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Aug. 3, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 318,000, an increase of 24,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 294,000. The 4-week moving average was 325,000, a decrease of
13,000 from the previous week's revised average of 338,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3
percent for the week ending July 27, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.2 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending July 27 was 2,576,000, an increase of 33,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,543,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,563,500, a
decrease of 13,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,577,250.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 290,633 in the week ending Aug. 3, a decrease of 4,161 from
the previous week. There were 310,703 initial claims in the comparable week in
1995.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1 percent during
the week ending July 27, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,434,700, a
decrease of 1,542 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.2
percent and the volume was 2,474,244.
Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the week ending
July 20.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 2,487 in the week ending July 27, a decrease of 73 from the prior week.
There were 2,173 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 117
from the preceding week.
There were 29,500 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI
benefits for the week ending July 20, an increase of 2,734 from the previous
week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 23,208, an increase
of 180 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending July 20 were
in Puerto Rico (6.0 percent), Rhode Island (4.2), Alaska (3.8), California
(3.3), Hawaii (3.2), New Jersey (3.2), Pennsylvania (3.1), Washington (3.1),
Oregon (2.9), and Connecticut (2.7).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending July 27
were in Delaware (+1,038), California (+344), Idaho (+285), Alaska (+52), and
North Dakota (+16), while the largest decreases were in Tennessee (-9,813),
North Carolina (-8,278), Michigan (-5,861), Alabama (-5,582), and Ohio
(-4,517).
