SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending July 27, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 292,000, a decrease of 29,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 321,000. The 4-week moving average was 337,500, a decrease of
14,750 from the previous week's revised average of 352,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2
percent for the week ending July 20, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.3 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending July 20 was 2,548,000, a decrease of 30,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,578,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,579,250, a
decrease of 5,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,584,750.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 293,115 in the week ending July 27, a decrease of 67,235
from the previous week. There were 311,708 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1995.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2 percent during
the week ending July 20, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,440,665, a decrease of 117,020 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 2.3 percent and the volume was 2,526,569.
Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the week ending
July 13.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 2,536 in the week ending July 20, a decrease of 979 from the prior
week. There were 2,286 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease
of 143 from the preceding week.
There were 25,817 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI
benefits for the week ending July 13, a decrease of 1,505 from the previous
week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 22,958, an increase
of 534 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending July 13 were
in Puerto Rico (6.3 percent), Rhode Island (4.6), Alaska (3.9), California
(3.4), Pennsylvania (3.3), New Jersey (3.2), Washington (3.2), Hawaii (3.1),
Michigan (3.1), Arkansas (2.9), and Oregon (2.9).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending July 20
were in Ohio (+3,446), Texas (+2,520), Illinois (+2,044), Missouri (+1,341),
and Maine (+794), while the largest decreases were in Michigan (-17,093), New
York (-9,290), North Carolina (-7,600), Kentucky (-6,199), and California
(-5,628).
