ETA Press Release: Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report Seasonally Adjusted Data [06/20/1996]

In the week ending June 15, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 357,000, a decrease of 4,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 361,000. The 4-week moving average was 354,250, an increase of 3,000 from the previous week's revised average of 351,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3 percent for the week ending June 8, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.2 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending June 8 was 2,550,000, an increase of 37,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,513,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,548,500, an increase of 3,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,544,750.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 307,046 in the week ending June 15, a decrease of 22,163 from the previous week. There were 337,812 initial claims in the comparable week in 1995.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1 percent during the week ending June 8, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,318,056, a decrease of 28,734 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.2 percent and the volume was 2,370,672.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska and Puerto Rico during the week ending June 1.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,617 in the week ending June 8, an increase of 199 from the prior week. There were 2,222 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 487 from the preceding week.

There were 22,734 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending June 1, a decrease of 1,150 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 22,709, a decrease of 184 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending June 1 were in Puerto Rico (6.1 percent), Alaska (4.8), Rhode Island (3.9), Washington (3.5), California (3.4), Oregon (3.2), Pennsylvania (3.0), Hawaii (2.9), New Jersey (2.9), and Arkansas (2.8).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 8 were in California (+12,301), North Carolina (+6,591), Florida (+4,489), Tennessee (+4,377), and Pennsylvania (+4,334), while the largest decreases were in Arkansas (-1,040), Texas (-556), Iowa (-155), Idaho (-129), and North Dakota (-122).
