ETA Press Release: Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report Seasonally Adjusted Data [06/06/1996]

In the week ending June 1, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 354,000, an increase of 9,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 345,000. The 4-week moving average was 349,000, an increase of 3,500 from the previous week's revised average of 345,500.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3 percent for the week ending May 25, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's revised rate of 2.2 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending May 25 was 2,605,000, an increase of 75,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,530,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,552,750, an increase of 9,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,543,500.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 265,582 in the week ending June 1, a decrease of 21,998 from the previous week. There were 286,566 initial claims in the comparable week in 1995.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0 percent during the week ending May 25, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,298,047, a decrease of 75,264 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.1 percent and the volume was 2,288,164.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska and Puerto Rico during the week ending May 18.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,804 in the week ending May 25, an increase of 90 from the prior week. There were 1,935 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 1 from the preceding week.

There were 22,675 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending May 18, a decrease of 2,955 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 23,377, a decrease of 446 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending May 18 were in Puerto Rico (6.0 percent), Alaska (5.2), Rhode Island (4.1), Washington (3.6), California (3.4), Oregon (3.3), Pennsylvania (3.1), Hawaii (2.9), New Jersey (2.9), Idaho (2.8), Montana (2.8), Vermont (2.8), and West Virginia (2.8).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending May 25 were in Colorado (+1,326), Florida (+801), Georgia (+780), Washington (+770), and Delaware (+724), while the largest decreases were in North Carolina (-2,524), California (-1,326), Tennessee (-785), New Jersey (-780), and Kentucky (-687).
