SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Sept. 21, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 340,000, an increase of 11,000 from the previous week's
unrevised figure of 329,000. The 4-week moving average was 328,750, an increase
of 2,500 from the previous week's revised average of 326,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2
percent for the week ending Sept. 14, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.1 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Sept. 14 was 2,499,000, an increase of 91,000 from the
preceding week's revised level of 2,408,000. The 4-week moving average was
2,500,000, a decrease of 4,250 from the preceding week's revised average of
2,504,250.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 273,407 in the week ending Sept. 21, an increase of 999
from the previous week. There were 272,431 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1995.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8 percent during
the week ending Sept. 14, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,086,865, a decrease of 22,947 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 2.0 percent and the volume was 2,186,550.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week
ending Sept. 7.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 2,250 in the week ending Sept. 14, an increase of 349 from the prior
week. There were 2,329 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase
of 252 from the preceding week.
There were 24,643 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Sept. 7, a decrease of 1,428 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 22,524, an increase of 163 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Sept. 7 were
in Puerto Rico (3.5 percent), Alaska (3.4), Rhode Island (3.2), California
(3.1), New Jersey (2.9), Hawaii (2.8), Washington (2.8), Pennsylvania (2.6),
Oregon (2.5), Arkansas (2.3), and New York (2.3).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Sept. 14
were in North Carolina (+10,671), California (+7,962), South Carolina (+3,315),
New York (+3,168), and New Jersey (+1,893), while the largest decreases were in
Puerto Rico (-1,649), Ohio (-1,516), Wisconsin (-1,230), Maryland (-365), and
Arkansas (-268).
