SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Sept. 7, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 338,000, an increase of 21,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 317,000. The 4-week moving average was 327,750, an increase
of 4,250 from the previous week's unrevised average of 323,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was
2.3 percent for the week ending Aug. 31, an increase of 0.1 percentage point
from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.2 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment
during the week ending Aug. 31 was 2,636,000, an increase of 128,000 from the
preceding week's revised level of 2,508,000. The 4-week moving average was
2,541,000, an increase of 42,500 from the preceding week's revised average of
2,498,500.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 245,088 in the week ending Sept. 7, a decrease of 5,500
from the previous week. There were 266,145 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1995.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent during
the week ending Aug. 31, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,148,082, a decrease of 91,657 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 2.0 percent and the volume was 2,157,979.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week
ending Aug. 24.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,668 in the week ending Aug. 31, a decrease of 233 from the prior
week. There were 2,216 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease
of 122 from the preceding week.
There were 25,017 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI
benefits for the week ending Aug. 24, a decrease of 3,091 from the previous
week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 22,826, an increase
of 117 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Aug. 24 were
in Puerto Rico (5.6 percent), Rhode Island (3.8), Alaska (3.6), California
(3.2), New Jersey (3.1), Hawaii (3.0), Washington (3.0), Pennsylvania (2.8),
Oregon (2.7), and Connecticut (2.6).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Aug. 31
were in Wisconsin (+716), California (+513), Michigan (+502), Virginia (+478),
and Ohio (+386), while the largest decreases were in North Carolina (-1,969),
New York (-1,567), New Jersey (-1,202), Texas (-994), and Pennsylvania (-694).
