SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Oct. 19, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 320,000, a decrease of 22,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 342,000. The 4-week moving average was 331,250, a decrease of
5,000 from the previous week's revised average of 336,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1
percent for the week ending Oct. 12, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.2 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Oct. 12 was 2,429,000, a decrease of 87,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,516,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,472,500, a
decrease of 15,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,487,500.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 272,867 in the week ending Oct. 19, a decrease of 33,674
from the previous week. There were 322,856 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1995.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent during
the week ending Oct. 12, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,967,783, a
decrease of 7,161 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.0
percent and the volume was 2,223,096.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
Oct. 5.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 3,080 in the week ending Oct. 12, a decrease of 1,446 from the prior
week. There were 2,233 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease
of 130 from the preceding week.
There were 26,180 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Oct. 5, a decrease of 815 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 22,913, a decrease of 109 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Oct. 5 were in
Puerto Rico (5.1 percent), Alaska (3.7), California (2.9), Rhode Island (2.9),
Hawaii (2.6), New Jersey (2.6), Oregon (2.5), Washington (2.5), Pennsylvania
(2.4), and Arkansas (2.3).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Oct. 12 were
in Pennsylvania (+2,878), Missouri (+2,478), Ohio (+1,896), Minnesota (+1,581),
and Tennessee (+1,553), while the largest decreases were in Michigan (-3,690),
Arkansas (-2,026), Oregon (-1,344), Oklahoma (-1,171), and California (-1,006).
