SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Oct. 12, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 340,000, an increase of 18,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 322,000. The 4-week moving average was 335,750, an increase
of 2,750 from the previous week's revised average of 333,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2
percent for the week ending Oct. 5, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 2.2 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Oct. 5 was 2,522,000, an increase of 28,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,494,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,489,000, an
increase of 29,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,459,500.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 304,874 in the week ending Oct. 12, an increase of 12,957
from the previous week. There were 306,465 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1995.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent during
the week ending Oct. 5, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week.
The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 1,979,875, a decrease of 18,135 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 1.9 percent and the volume was 2,081,344.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
Sept. 28.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 4,523 in the week ending Oct. 5, an increase of 2,633 from the prior
week. There were 2,366 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase
of 156 from the preceding week.
There were 27,052 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Sept. 28, an increase of 1,825 from the previous week.
Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 23,036, an increase of 250
from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Sept. 28 were
in Puerto Rico (6.5 percent), Alaska (3.7), California (3.0), Rhode Island
(3.0), Hawaii (2.6), New Jersey (2.6), Washington (2.6), Oregon (2.4),
Pennsylvania (2.4), and Arkansas (2.2).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Oct. 5 were
in California (+5,361), Arkansas (+2,613), Michigan (+2,546), Florida (+2,344),
and New York (+2,287), while the largest decreases were in Puerto Rico (-860),
Tennessee (-844), Nevada (-393), Iowa (-353), and North Carolina (-227).
