SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Nov. 16, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 344,000, an increase of 17,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 327,000. The 4-week moving average was 336,250, an increase
of 6,250 from the previous week's revised average of 330,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2
percent for the week ending Nov. 9, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 2.2 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Nov. 9 was 2,499,000, an increase of 19,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,480,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,473,250, an
increase of 17,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,455,500.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 329,154 in the week ending Nov. 16, a decrease of 8,915
from the previous week. There were 425,889 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1995.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent during
the week ending Nov. 9, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,119,120, an increase of 35,859 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 2.2 percent and the volume was 2,422,640.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
Nov. 2.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 2,337 in the week ending Nov. 9, an increase of 45 from the prior week.
There were 2,030 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of
134 from the preceding week.
There were 27,305 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Nov. 2, a decrease of 1,952 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 23,020, a decrease of 299 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Nov. 2 were in
Alaska (5.2 percent), Puerto Rico (4.8), California (3.1), Rhode Island (3.0),
Washington (2.9), Oregon (2.7), Hawaii (2.6), Arkansas (2.5), New Jersey (2.5),
and Pennsylvania (2.5).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Nov. 9 were
in California (+3,941), New York (+2,668), North Carolina (+2,547),
Pennsylvania (+2,016), and Michigan (+1,822), while the largest decreases were
in South Carolina (-993), Arkansas (-818), Oklahoma (-778), Texas (-636), and
Wisconsin (-590).
