Heritage

PIT volunteers record a site in the High Uintas. The Ashley’s Heritage Program endeavors to conserve and understand the traces, shadows and stories of America’s human past. As they travel through time, forest visitors make a personal connection with the past, sense the diversity of the human experience, and begin to understand the fundamental relationship between the people and the land.

Heritage Program staff provide a number of school and campfire programs. On the ANF there is over 10,000 years of history, from ancient Paleoindians hunting along the Green River to Fremont farmers storing their corn in hidden granaries on canyon walls or leaving seasonal hunting camps in the mountains. More recently explorers, mountain men, miners, cowboys, sheepherders, loggers, and finally the Forest Service have left their mark on the land. The articles, photographs, and documents on this website cover many topics. Some are for serious students of prehistory, others are for more general audiences. This is our history, our past, our story. Please send suggestions, observations, or comments to cejohnson@fs.fed.us.
