Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month
"One Culture, Many Races"
|
|
The Centers for Disease
Control & Prevention (CDC) celebrated Hispanic/Latino Heritage
Month by hosting "One Culture, Many Races." The event
took place on Tuesday, September 30th, at CDC/ATSDR's Columbia Building
in Atlanta, Georgia. The featured speaker was Venus Ginés, M.A., Director, Día de la Mujer
Latina, Inc.

Ms. Gines discussed some of the
barriers Latinas experience in obtaining cancer screening tests,
including fear, modesty, language and cultural barriers, financial
barriers, and mistrust of the medical establishment. The health fairs
that Dia de la Mujer Latina organizes provide culturally and
linguistically appropriate venues for Latinas to learn about, feel
comfortable with, and receive cancer screening. |
During Hispanic/Latino
Heritage month, America celebrates the
traditions, ancestry and experiences of U.S. residents who trace their
roots to Spain, Mexico, and the Spanish-speaking nations of Central
America, South America, and the Caribbean. Sept. 15 was chosen as the
starting point for the celebration because it is the anniversary of
independence of five Latin American countries -- Costa Rica, El
Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico
declared its independence on Sept. 16 and Chile on
Sept. 18. |
