Fire

Photo of an air tanker dropping fire retardant on a fire.Fire management combines elements of fire prevention, fire suppression, and fire use.

Wildland fire is inevitable in North American ecosystems. Most wildland fire must be suppressed to meet resource and social objectives. Wise use of fire approximates the historical role of fire and enhances long-term wildland values.

Effectively managing forest fuels and dealing with wildfires requires coordination between the Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, other agencies, and communities.

Fire Hire

The Forest Service hires permanent and seasonal firefighters. Look for job series #0462, which includes most fire-related jobs, when searching Rocky Mountain Region, USAJobs, and other listings.

Some firefighting and restoration work is done by contractors.

Fire Prevention

Campers and other public land users need to follow basic campfire care.

Fire Restrictions

There may be fire restrictions in effect for campfires, cook stoves, smoking, or chainsaw use.

Fire Safety

Check fire safety tips for forest and grassland visitors.

Fire Suppression

Find out about our firefighting program and forces, including interagency hotshot crews in the Rocky Mountain area.

Fuels Management

To protect homes and improve the health of the forest, we can use several methods to reduce thick forest vegetation (fuels) where the forest may be subject to a destructive wildland fire.

National Fire Plan

The Forest has expanded fire assessment, suppression, and prevention programs to carry out the National Fire Plan.
