JUNE MILK PRODUCTION DOWN 2.9 PERCENT

New York dairy herds produced 984 million pounds of milk during June, according to the New York Agricultural Statistics Service. This total is down 2.9 percent from the June 2003 level. The decrease was the result of fewer cows in New York's herd.

The number of milk cows totaled 656,000 head, down 19,000 head from June of the previous year. Milk per cow averaged 1,500 pounds, unchanged from June 2003.

Milk producers in New York State received an average of $18.70 per hundredweight for milk sold during June, down $1.30 from the previous month but up $6.90 from a year earlier.

Milk production in the 20 major states during June totaled 12.4 billion pounds, down slightly from production in these same states during June 2003. Production per cow averaged 1,603 pounds for June, up 7 pounds from June 2003. The number of cows on farms in the 20 major states was 7.74 million head, 44,000 head less than June 2003, but 19,000 head more than May 2004
