Wagma Jalawan

Wagma’s warm voice and professional demeanor help anchor Voice of America’s new Pashto language broadcast, VOA Deewa Radio, which airs 24 hours a day, seven-days-a week. Wagma originally worked for VOA Urdu – Radio Aap ki Dunyaa and later switched over to VOA Deewa Radio to present in her native Pashto where she aspires to make a difference in the lives of ordinary women. Wagma enjoys reporting on issues ranging from health, womens issues to politics.

Prior to joining VOA, Wagma helped produce news files for local Afghan television feeds and also disc jockeyed for a popular music show. Wagma graduated from federal board in Pakistan with a focus on psychology and political science.

Born in the garrison city of Abbottabad, Wagma was an ideal candidate for a career in nursing, singing and teaching. It was her marriage with an Afghan-born and US settled businessman, which brought her to Washington to pursue more diversified career in broadcasting.

Wagma loves to read books and interact with children in here spare time. She also enjoys meeting new people from different cultures and to learn more about them.
