Economic Growth in AfghanistanJuly 22, 2004, Kabul, Afghanistan: Minister of Commerce, Sayed Mustafa Kazemi, and U.S. Special Presidential Envoy and Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad, lay the first cement for the cornerstone of the Bagrami Industrial Park in Kabul due to be completed in December 2004. The Bagrami Industrial Park is the first of three industrial parks that the United States is funding to spur economic growth in Afghanistan. The other two will be built in Kandahar and Mazar-I-Sharif. The industrial parks will provide tenants reliable electric power, clean land titles, 24-hour site security, full pressure water systems, paved roads, central sewage systems and professional management. “Bagami Industrial Park is a very good step forward in the process of cultivating private investment, as it is private investment that will bring more jobs to Afghans who are eager to work,” Ambassador Khalilzad said. “Afghanistan truly is open for business, and today is yet another sign of Afghanistan’s progress towards a more prosperous future.” U.S. Embassy Kabul Photo
