Since 1983, the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Office on AIDS (OA) has supported research activities related to the primary and secondary prevention of AIDS and the neurobehavioral sequelae that develop as a result of HIV infection. OA's research priorities include: (1) the development of behavior change and prevention strategies to reduce the further spread of the epidemic; (2) central nervous system (CNS) effects of HIV infection and behavioral outcome; (3) clinical phenomena of HIV-related neuropsychological and neuropsychiatric disorders; (4) mental health services relevant to HIV infection and the severely mentally ill; (5) the development of therapeutic agents; (6) behavioral issues in vaccine trials; (7) the role of families in preventing and adapting to HIV/AIDS; and (8) the history and prevention of AIDS mental disorders.
