Taped Statement for the Distinguished American Diplomats SECRETARY RICE: Throughout our nation's history, our interests and our ideals have been advanced through the work of talented American diplomats. Today, with the launch of the Distinguished American Diplomats commemorative stamps series, we highlight six of the very best members of our nation's diplomatic community: Clifton Wharton, Sr., Francis Willis, Charles Bohlen, , Philip Habib, Robert Murphy, and Hiram Bingham IV. Throughout the turbulent 20th century, during times of great challenge for America and for the greater cause of liberty for which we stand in the world, these six diplomats made their mark on history as trailblazers, as strategic thinkers, as peacemakers and humanitarians. They embodied what is best about America: our optimism, our valor, our spirit of service. And today, it is necessary and fitting that we honor the lives and the legacies of these great Americans. We are living at another crucial time for our country, another time of new and unprecedented transformation for our world. The men and women of the State Department, like their distinguished diplomatic predecessors, are working today to advance the cause of freedom and democracy worldwide. And in this historic mission, our diplomats are summoned to the same high standards of service as those who came before them -- individuals of courage and conviction, like those we honor today. It is the memory of these great diplomats that serves as a source of strength and inspiration for all who use diplomacy today to build a future of peace and hope. I applaud Chairman Miller, and everyone at the U.S. Postal Service, for helping to acquaint the American people and people across the world with six of our country's finest diplomats.
