	Press Releases September 10, 2003   DODD, LIEBERMAN ANNOUNCE NEW LONDON FIREFIGHTERS TO RECEIVE OVER $100,000   WASHINGTON - New London Fire Department will receive $136,395 in federal grant money from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Senators Chris Dodd and Joe Lieberman announced today. “As the nation reflects on the anniversary of the 9/11 and the tremendous loss our nation suffered, we are reminded of the sacrifices firefighters make every day,” Dodd said. “This assistance can ensure that these heroes on the front lines have the tools they need to protect themselves and our families, not only from fires, but from the risk of terrorism.” "Two years after 9/11 we are reminded of how valuable firefighters are to our communities," Lieberman said. “We owe it to them, and to the residents of New London, to ensure that they receive the best equipment and the best training available." DHS awards the money as part of the Assistance for Firefighters Grant Program, administered by the U.S. Fire Administration. The grants, awarded directly to local fire departments, will be used to “increase the effectiveness of firefighting operations, fund firefighter health and safety programs, acquire new fire apparatus, enhance EMS programs, and conduct fire prevention and safety programs.” The awards were made possible by the FIRE Act of 2000, a law authored by Dodd and co-sponsored by Lieberman that gives local fire departments the ability to purchase new equipment, hire new personnel, and initiate education and training programs.
