Job growth moderated in 1989; unemployment steady

The slowdown in employment growth occurred across most industries, with actual job losses concentrated in manufacturing. Unemployment was relatively stable, averaging 5.3 percent. This article is the most recent of a continuing annual series on the status of the labor market.
