Developments in women's labor force participation

Howard V. Hayghe
Economist, Office of Employment and Unemployment Statistics, Bureau of Labor Statistics

During the early 1990's, there was no growth in women's labor force participation rates; since 1994 however, the rate has edged upward, with mothers accounting for most of the rise. This article traces the developments in women's labor force participation since 1975, including discussion of trends for women with children and women of different ages.
