BLS employment projections for 1990: an evaluation

Norman C. Saunders
Economist, Office of Employment Projections, Bureau of Labor Statistics

Assessments of BLS projections of 1990 employment reveal that the projections improve the nearer to the target year they are made and as a result of evaluation. The downside is that they often fail to foresee major structural shifts in the U.S. economy. This article examines projections of 1990 economic activity and employment, in the aggregate and by industry, and is part of a continuing effort to improve and refine the projections.
