Consumer spending on durables and services in the 1980's

Maureen Boyle Gray
Economist, Division of Consumer Expenditure Surveys, Bureau of Labor Statistics

Much growth was spurred by women's increasing labor force participation. This article examines the pattern of spending of U.S. consumers on selected durables and services from 1980 to 1990, revealing that expenditures are divided fairly evenly between goods and services during the period.
