Loius Mclane Secretary of State, Term of Appointment:

- Born in Smyrna, Delaware on May 28, 1786;
- Served as a midshipman in the Navy, 1798-1801;
- Attended Newark Academy (now the University of Delaware);
- Admitted to the bar in 1807 and started practice in Smyrna;
- Married Catherine Mary Milligan in 1812;
- Served in the War of 1812;
- Representative from Delaware, 1817-1827;
- Senator from Delaware, 1827-1829;
- Served as Minister to Great Britain, 1829-1831;
- Secretary of the Treasury in President Jackson's Cabinet, 1831-1833;
- Secretary of State from May 29, 1833 until June 30, 1834;
- As Secretary of State, reorganized the Department, introducing systematic procedure into its operations;
- Became president of the Morris Canal & Banking Company in New York City;
- Moved to Baltimore, Maryland, where he was president of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Company, 1837-1847; At this time also served as Minister to Great Britain, 1845-1846;
- Delegate to the Maryland Constitutional Convention of 1850;
- Died in Baltimore on October 7, 1857.
