The American Running Association, founded in 1968 as the National Jogging Association, provides information and support programs for people interested in running as a practical way of achieving physical fitness. The association offers its members information, literature, discounts on exercise books, software, and rehab products, and medical advice on exercise-related problems. The American Running Association's "Exercise Across America" program aids self-motivation by encouraging exercisers to compete against themselves and maintains a Running Shoe Database to assist runners in selecting the right shoe.
The American Running publications include a series of brochures on running and health, reports of activities, and a monthly newsletter.
